Differentiated Learning
Differentiated teaching is not only about teaching standards in a different way, I see differentiated teaching as a way where learning should be formed around the students. Students should be able to fully understand and successfully learn the standards that are being taught in creative ways that spark the interests of students. The curriculum that is being taught should be learned in a way that students can apply their learning to their outside world. I really liked the way Carol Ann Tomlinson and Marcia B. Imbeau (2014) phrase this, they mention “Curriculum should help students to make meaning of the world around the and continually envision their potential roles in that world” (p. 5).
Diversity inside the American classroom is very common. Diversity is shown in different aspects such as cultural, language, learning, capability diversity. All these different aspects of our student’s shape who they are. It also shapes how they think and how they learn. Teachers need to be aware of who their students are. It becomes of crucial importance that teachers are aware how individual students learn. I like to use hands on activities because I am a strong believer that students learn best when they do activities and learn in the process rather than reading about it. I also like to do collaborative assignments. In collaborative assignments, students learn from each other. Students teaching students not only benefits the students who need the help but it also benefits the student who is helping. Students who are being helped will be able to feel comfortable with peers in asking for help. And students who are helping able to explain a concept to a classmate will have higher self esteem creating an atmosphere where both sides learn from each other.
